Is The Law Done Away With?

I am sure many of you have both believed at one point in time or another, and have heard many people say, “the laws are done away with.” Even similar statements such as, “we don’t have to keep the law.” Or even, “it’s impossible to keep the law.” All of which is man’s philosophy, and not a single one of those statements is founded upon scripturally.

Matthew 5:17 KJVS

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

The scriptures let you know from the writings of Christ himself, that he did not come to destroy the laws or do away with the laws of God. Yet, when many people read this scripture, they gloss over that portion and focus on he came to fulfill the law. Therefore, it is done away with and we no longer have to keep it. Not understanding that is impossible for multiple reasons, which we will get into. The first of which is obvious because it would be a contradiction to the opening sentence he started with. Why would he say, I didn’t come to destroy the law TWICE in the same breath but now you don’t have to keep it?

Luke 24:44 KJVS

And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

If you read the account above in Matthew and the account above in Luke in context, you will see what is being said in Luke is in reference to what he was saying while he was alive on earth concerning “I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” Which he lets you know is in reference to all things being fulfilled concerning him. Which we read prophecies about all throughout the books of the prophets and psalms, which comprises of what we know today as the Bible. In particular the Old Testament.

Matthew 5:18 KJVS

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

If that weren’t enough, he continues in Matthew letting us know that not even a single line, dot, or digit (hence, jot) will be omitted until heaven and earth cease to exist. Well, last I checked we are still standing on earth and we can still look up and see the heavens. So it looks like the law is still in effect!

Ecclesiastes 1:4 KJV

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

That’s the kicker… The earth was made to abide forever! Some of you still don’t get it. This goes in hand with Matthew 5:18. If he is saying I won’t take anything away from the law until heaven and earth pass and then lets you know that the reality is heaven and earth won’t pass but abides forever, what is he saying? The law will be in force forever!

2 Esdras 9:37 KJVA

Notwithstanding the law perisheth not, but remaineth in his force.

The law has not perished or died. It remains strong and to be carried out and enforced.

Romans 7:7 KJVS

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Now one thing one may note from this verse and possibly a select other verse or two, is as if the law is sin or teaches you how to sin. But this is not accurate. What this is saying, is that it is through the law that I can identify what a sin is. It is how I know and understand everything that God identifies as offensive to him.

Revelation 20:12 KJVS

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Notice in the book of Revelation in one of the last chapters, that God is judging the souls of mankind. How can you judge someone if you do not have laws that govern them? It is because you have laws that one can be judged based on what they did or did not do according to those laws. These are the two books being opened. One book being that of your actions, both good and bad, and another book containing the laws that govern what is good or bad; hence the Bible. Neither of which is a new understanding.

Exodus 32:31-33 KJVS

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. [32] Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. [33] And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

We get a couple of things from this passage. Moses was letting God know the people sinned. But he also made mention of something peculiar that many of us may not have caught. He asked God to forgive them, if not he asked that he be removed from the book that God wrote; which is the book of life. But God had to let him know that whoever sinned against him, those would be the ones he would remove from his book. So what does this mean? It means the book of life was always in play. It was nothing new that came on the scene, judgement day was always the plan. Secondly, it lets us know that it is sin that causes us to be removed from the book.

Revelation 20:15 KJVS

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

If your name is blotted out of that book, which is the book of life. You are not receiving the good rewards of the kingdom. You will be the least in the kingdom of heaven; you will be in the lake of fire.

1 Corinthians 6:9 KJVS

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

Anyone who is not moving in righteousness will not be able to inherit the good fruit of the kingdom of heaven. And unfortunately many are deceived into thinking God just has to accept you and let everybody in just because he is God and you read he loved people. No! God does not need you, me or any of us. We are all replaceable. God chose you. God loves you if you are willing to be righteous and obedient.

Deuteronomy 6:25 KJVS

And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

See, to better understand what unrighteousness is, you need to know what righteousness is. Righteousness, is the choice to apply all of the laws statues and commandments God gave to us. Not in partiality but holistically.

Revelation 22:14-15 KJVS

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. [15] For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

It is through the application of God’s laws that we are able to enter into and receive the gifts of the kingdom of heaven. So why then would one teach, or be led to believe we don’t have to keep the laws? Because it is Satans job to deceive you. Both through you and others to lead you in the wrong direction contrary to things that will get you salvation. This is why we must read and stay vigilant so we don’t allow ourselves to be misguided by our own thoughts and ideologies or someone else’s and stick to the script.

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
